What is an Internship?

“An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.”   -    NACE

Internships are a way to:
  • Gain career related experience
  • Explore careers or solidify career choices
  • Increase knowledge and skills
Test classroom theories in the “real world”
  • Contribute to an organization/company
  • Network and make contacts
  • Obtain on-the-job training

Why are Internships Important?

As mentioned above, there are several advantages to securing an internship. With today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for candidates who have prior work experience. For full-time college students, obtaining this “prior work experience” is often extremely difficult. An internship most often qualifies as this needed work experience. An internship can increase an individual's qualifications and make his or her candidacy standout from the larger applicant pool. Remember that internships allow an intern to learn more about the business world, government sector or non-profit sector. An internship emphasizes learning on the job rather than earning money, and provides a chance to see if the career path is a good fit.

To demonstrate how an internship can increase your competitiveness in the job market, consider these statistics from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) 2009 Experiential Education Survey:
  • 67.7% of 2007-08 interns were offered fulltime positions
  • 83.6% of these offers were accepted
  • 35.3% of employers' fulltime, entry-level college hires came from their internship programs
