Pre-College Programs


What is Pre-College?

Pre-College programs provide academic and social support for students in middle and high school. Students explore higher education options, discover college majors and careers and build leadership skills to prepare for future opportunities. The programs emphasize the importance of higher education, through academic programming and enrichment activities.

Program Goals

  • Demonstrate the importance of academic rigor and its role in student success.
  • Create an understanding of post-secondary options available, the college application process, and available financial resources.
  • Motivate students in the pursuit of higher education and future aspirations.
  • Develop a positive support system for students by providing mentors and role models from the campus and the community.
  • Encourage leadership skills through participation in positive activities during middle and high school.


College Prep

The College Prep program operates during the academic year and is available for students in 6th-12th grade. The program serves Waukesha North high school and Butler, Central, and Horning middle schools, providing after school programming two time per week, at each school, throughout the school year. College Prep works to improve basic skills, competency in core subject areas, and career explorations.

VOLUNTEER BENEFITS

  • A letter of recommendation from the Pre-College Supervisor
  • A Certificate of Appreciation and celebration dinner to thank volunteers for their commitment and service (at the end of the semester)
  • Opportunities for professional development, leadership development, and networking with school professionals and community leaders
  • Life-enriching experiences from working with students of diverse backgrounds

    VOLUNTEER DUTY
  • Be a role model for students who may/not be interested in higher education
  • Assist in maintaining academic standards and developing healthy homework/study habits
  • Motivate and encourage students to have post-secondary options and goals
  • Commit to one school (minimum) for two hours, one day a week throughout the semester
  • DESIRABLE: Participate in the Saturday parents and students’ programing (once a month)
  • DESIRABLE: Participate in job shadows, enrichment and volunteer activities with the whole program (on occasion)


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Experience working with youth desirable
  • Tutor experience desirable
  • Motivated and have a desire to assist peers
  • Effective personal time management


SCHOOLS & HOURS

  • Central Middle School: Monday 2:30-4:30pm
  • North High School: Tuesday 1:45-3:00pm; 3:00-4:15pm
  • South High School: Wednesday 2:45-4:30pm

University Camp

The University Camp program operates during June and is available for students entering 6th-8th grade. Students attend this one week program, where they participate in classes, workshops, and activities on campus at UW-Waukesha. The program features a number of guest speakers from campus and the community, who reinforce English and math academic areas, while building leadership and life skills to promote future success.
