Roles and Responsibilities of Advisors and Students

At UW-Waukesha, the advisor/student relationship is viewed as a collaborative one. Working together, the advisor and student determine a meaningful educational path that is consistent with the student’s interests, abilities and values. Both the student and the advisor have particular roles and responsibilities within this relationship, which are outlined below.

Expected Learning Outcomes for UW-Waukesha Students within the Advising Process

You will:

  • Understand the requirements for the Associate’s Degree
  • Understand how to access tools helpful for transferring (TIS, UW-HELP, etc)

The Student’s Role in the Academic Advising Process is to:

  • Acquire information needed to assume final responsibility for course scheduling, program planning, and successful completion of all graduation requirements.
  • Seek academic and career information needed to meet educational goals.
  • Become knowledgeable about relevant policies, procedures, and rules of the University and academic program.
  • Be prepared with accurate information and relevant materials when contacting the advisor.
  • Consult with advisor at least once a semester to decide on courses, check progress towards major selected, and discuss the suitability of other educational opportunities provided by the University.

The Advisor’s Role in the Academic Advising Process is to:

  • Understand and effectively communicate UW-Waukesha polices and procedures
  • Listen to your concerns and respect your individual values and choices
  • Help you evaluate and define your academic , career and personal goals
  • Support and encourage you as you work toward meeting you educational goals
  • Encourage you to make your own decisions responsibly
  • Be available to answer your questions through scheduled meeting, walk-ins, phone or email
  • Refer you to other campus offices and resources as appropriate
