Faculty Advising Role
Roles of Faculty Advisors & Students
An advisor’s role is to:
Be aware of the limitations of responsibility, which place the burden of the advisement process on the shoulders of the students.
Explore the educational objectives, interests and motivations of the student. Guide the student in the development of a course of study which reflects their choices.
Become knowledgeable about up-to-date graduation requirements and transfer information.
Provide the student with information about the alternatives, limitations, and possible consequences of their academic decisions.
Assist students in academic difficulty to explore the possible causes of their challenges and make appropriate referrals to the Study Center or to a Student Services Advisor for individual attention.
A student’s role is to:
Know the requirements of his/her particular academic program, selecting courses that meet those requirements and monitoring his/her progress towards graduation.
Consult with advisors designated to answer his/her questions.
Schedule and keep academic advising appointments in a timely manner throughout the academic year to avoid seeking advising only during busy registration periods.
Be prepared for the advising session. Bring a list of questions to be answered, a tentative schedule and be prepared to discuss goals and interests with the advisor.
