Lectures Look into India, Back on Century, and Forward to Election
| WAUKESHA - The 50 Minutes Lecture series at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha this semester will feature a discussion of life in India and neighboring Pakistan, an historical review of the 20th century, and an analytic glimpse at the year’s election. In each case, faculty from the campus will discuss topics that interest them. The presentations are open to the public at no charge. They will be held in Conference Room 101, located in the Commons on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.
(NOTE: The 50 Minutes Lecture originally scheduled for February 16 on “The Lives of the Stars” has been cancelled, because the speaker developed a schedule conflict.)Native of India, Shubhangi Stalder, an associate professor of mathematics, and associate professor of chemistry Asif Habib, from Pakistan, will speak from experience in addressing “The Indian Subcontinent: Life in India and Pakistan.” Their presentation is set for Tuesday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. Stalder completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in India at the University of Pune before coming to the U.S. and earning an additional master’s and a doctoral degree. Likewise, Habib came to this country armed with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Punjab in Pakistan and took his Ph.D. in the U.S.At noon on Wednesday, April 5, associate professor of history Steve Werner will be “Looking Back at the 20th Century” from his perspective as an historian. Students have voted Werner one of the best teachers on campus.
Finally, Margaret Hirschberg, associate professor of political science, will give background and analysis on “Election 2000,” including the role to be played by Generation X. She will speak at noon on Wednesday, April 19. New to the campus this year, Hirschberg received her Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1998 having specialized in several areas including political theory and American politics.
