WAUKESHA Poet and professor, Quan Barry will read some of her compositions and speak to students about writing poetry at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha on Tuesday, February 11, at noon in the library. Sponsored by the University Convocations Committee, it is open to the public at no charge, and light refreshments will be served.
The product of a Vietnamese mother and an American soldier, Barry writes about what she knows: the cultural leaps that so often face Americans.
An assistant professor of English at UW-Madison, she was born in Saigon and raised on Bostons north shore. She holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and has done fellowships at Stanford University and at UW-Madisons Institute for Creative Writing The author of a book of poetry, Asylum (2001), she also has published poetry in P.N. Review, The Missouri Review, and The New Yorker.
The following day, February 12, the second annual student poetry contest, sponsored by the student African American Union, will feature a public reading at noon in the Commons dining room. Students who have submitted poetry on Diversity in America will read their work. Judges will select the top three for prizes of $75, $50, and $25, respectively. |
