Campus Celebrates Earth Week with Series of Lectures

WAUKESHA – The student Ecology Club at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha will celebrate Earth Day this year with three noon lectures, sandwiching Earth Day, April 22, in the middle. All are free and open to the public.

On Monday, April 21, Dick Bautz, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ expert on non-game mammals, will discuss “Lemmings, Shrews and Other Small Mammals of Wisconsin” at a noon lecture in Northview Hall, Room 055. He will describe ways to identify the animals and address their ecological value He also will present research findings on rare species and small mammals as carriers of Lyme disease.

Appearing on the stage in the dining area, Jeannie Lord, from Pineview Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, will speak on Tuesday, Earth Day, on “Caring for Injured Wildlife.” For her presentation, she will bring along live animals from Pineview and will describe her work as a rehabilitator, stressing the importance of human appreciation, respect and co-existence with wildlife.

Finally, Charlene Lemoine from the Waukesha Environmental Action League (WEAL) will be on campus in Northview Hall, Room 055 on Wednesday, April 23, to present “Zero Waste, Idealistic Dream or Realistic Goal?” She will show a video by the GrassRoots Recycling Network at noon and then discuss how the “zero waste” approach preserves natural resources, reduces additions to landfills, creates jobs, improves manufacturing efficiency, and produces long-range sustainability.
