WAUKESHA The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha will show the French-language film, Wild Reeds (Les Roseaux sauvages), on Friday, October 24, at 1:00 and 7:30 p.m. in Northview Hall, Room 055. Admission is free, and the public is welcome.
The 1994 release will be shown with English subtitles and runs about 110 minutes. It is not rated but does contain some adult language and situations.
In the story, four young people, all students at a boarding school in southwestern France, deal with personal problems and political upheaval as the war in Algeria nears its end. One young man must come to terms with his homosexuality; another, a recent arrive from Algeria, is still caught up in the turmoil there; and a third searches for meaning after the death of his soldier brother. The fourth member of the group is Maïté, the daughter of their teacher, who tries to befriend each of the young men.
Sara Toenes, UW-Waukesha emeritus professor of French, organizes the foreign film series on campus and will introduce this film.
