Published Poet Helps Students Introduce Literary Magazine

WAUKESHA – Poet Betsy Brown turned her grief and horror over family members’ lost battles with cancer – breast cancer attacking her mother and two sisters and pancreatic cancer in her father – into poetic, soul-searching soliloquies. On Wednesday, April 7, she will be at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha reading from a collection of these, Year of Morphines, at the introductory ceremony for the 26th annual edition of the student literary magazine, The Windy Hill Review. Beginning at noon, it will be held in the library on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. The public is welcome, and there is no charge. Refreshments will be served.

A native of Oshkosh, WI, Brown now works in corporate communications in Minneapolis. Her book was selected for the 2001 National Poetry Series, a program established in 1978 through which five poetry books are published each year with funds provided by the late James Michener, the Copernicus Society of America, Edward J. Piszek, the Lannan Foundation, and the Tiny Tiger Foundation.

The Windy Hill Review contains written submissions from 20 named and several anonymous contributors as well as artwork from four others. Student Ann Pilot, Muskego, was editor-in-chief, assisted by associate editors, students Molly McGuire, Watertown, and Justin Ganser, Hartford. Assistant professor of English Greg Ahrenhoerster, Whitefish Bay, served as the faculty advisor, and assistant professors of art Barbara Reinhart and Jeff Noska, Dousman, provided art consultation. The publication should be available at the introductory event.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admissions, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
