Garon Exhibits Mixed Media Work, Interprets Reality

WAUKESHA – Former University of Wisconsin-Waukesha student and UW-Milwaukee BFA candidate Kari Garon, Waukesha, will show very recent paintings in the Fine Arts Center Gallery on the UW-Waukesha campus, 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. She will hold an opening reception Sunday, September 12, from 5:00 -8:30 p.m., while the jazz trio Rutabaga Blu provides background music. Her work will be on display through October 10. Admission is free.

Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Tuesdays; during special events, or by appointment. Phone University Relations, (262) 521-5445 for admission information or to arrange for a viewing.

Using mixed media and a limited color palette, Garon tries to assemble memories. “Much of my work encompasses the idea of one’s environment creating an internal sense of history in which we as humans are continually attempting to organize and pay homage,” Garon explains. Her art preserves her historical experiences, “keeping them safe and forever real or tangible.”

In the work presented, she uses humans and land as vessels to hold collected bits of information that together have meaning. The seemingly quiet, delicate shells contain the dynamic, organic, eroding data. She attaches these collected elements in a way to organize them “within a complex social environment.” In placing scraps of evolving history in a framework, one creates one’s own personal knowledge and chooses one’s ignorances, she believes. Having assumed the responsibility for forming the prism of personal history, the individual uses it to interpret reality.

Garon, who expects to graduate from UW-Milwaukee in spring 2005, has been showing her work around the state as a member of Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors, but this will be her first solo show.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore UW Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admissions, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5040 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
